My mama always told me not to judge a book by its cover. When Bear on Bear's CD arrived on a CDR, name colored on by a Sharpie, I scoffed a little and popped it in. It didn't leave my CD player for two weeks. I got the feeling they just said to themselves, "Damn, this is good! Into the ether with it!"
With snappy, danceable rhythms, and Dylan Travis's remarkable sometimes-warbly, sometimes-smooth, honey voice, Bear on Bear are on to something good. This is indie rock at its most fun: experimental, raucous, and pretty. The only drawback is the band's name. Bears and wolves have taken over rock music. All the creatures of the sea are jealous. Whale on Whale, anyone?
